“Leyli and Majnun” Ballet in One Act
Synopsis
In the Poet’s imagination, the images of Leyli and Majnun, two lovers, come to life. Before his eyes unfolds their beautiful yet deeply sorrowful fate and the story of their love.
A madrasa resembling those depicted in ancient Eastern miniatures. Young men and women are celebrating. Beautiful Leyli and Geys, seemingly oblivious to everyone around them, declare their love for one another. They cannot imagine living apart.
Leyli’s father decides to marry his daughter to the wealthy merchant Ibn Salam. However, when he learns of Leyli’s love for Geys-Majnun, he becomes furious.
He firmly rejects the request of Geys’s father, who wishes to arrange the marriage of his son to Leyli. Devastated by the refusal, Geys-Majnun falls into despair. Overwhelmed by grief, he withdraws into the desert and chooses a life of solitude.
Leyli’s father invites guests to the wedding of Leyli and Ibn Salam. The friends of Leyli and Majnun know that even beneath her bridal veil, Leyli remains emotionally distant from the man she does not love. Her thoughts and desires belong only to Geys.
Amid the noise and celebration of the wedding procession, Ibn Salam realizes that his love for Leyli is unrequited. Unable to find a way into the heart of the woman he loves, he gradually loses his strength.
Majnun, who has renounced the world, wanders through the desert composing ghazals about his unhappy love. His poetic imagination brings the image of his beloved Leyli before his eyes. In his verses, the lovers are always together.
Separated from her beloved Geys, Leyli is consumed by sorrow. Tragic Fate relentlessly follows her.
Geys mourns Leyli and, as though finally united with his beloved, joins her in Eternity.
The Poet concludes his story by glorifying the pure and eternal love of Leyli and Majnun.

Synopsis
“Whether Dulcinea truly existed or whether she was merely an invention is known to God alone... I did not invent my lady, nor do I imagine her only in my dreams; I see her as an ideal lady worthy of everyone’s admiration and reverence.”

The noble knight Don Quixote shares with his faithful friend Sancho the thoughts that trouble him: wicked and treacherous creatures are trying to torment and wear him down.
He tells Sancho that the beautiful Dulcinea of Toboso, the woman who has captured his heart, is in the hands of his cruel enemy, the sorcerer Montesinos. Unable to accept such treachery, Don Quixote vows to set her free. But the ruthless Montesinos does not remain idle. Determined to stop Don Quixote, he places one obstacle after another in the brave knight’s path, and in their confrontations Don Quixote suffers defeat.
Now, in the imagination of the Knight, wounded in battle, the image of the woman who has captured his heart appears once again. Responding to Dulcinea’s call, he gathers his remaining strength and sets out in search of her...
The city. A festive carnival. The townspeople are celebrating. Don Quixote appears, searching for his beloved. The cruel Montesinos is there as well. He tries to convince the carnival participants that Don Quixote is insane. The people believe Montesinos and greet the knight with ridicule.
Suddenly, Dulcinea appears among the crowd. Don Quixote tries to draw everyone’s attention to her — he wants to tell them: look, she exists, she is alive! Yet no one else can see the woman who has captured his heart.
Montesinos intervenes once again and plays a cruel trick on the knight: he turns Dulcinea into a doll.
The people and Montesinos mock Don Quixote, while he, still believing in the existence of his beautiful angel, cries out: “She is alive! Look, this is Dulcinea!” But no one hears him.
The celebration comes to an end and the people disperse. Once again, the image of his beloved appears before Don Quixote, calling upon the knight to continue the struggle.
Don Quixote’s faithful friend Sancho becomes his squire. Preparing for new battles, the two friends are no longer intimidated by Montesinos. However, the cruel sorcerer sends his followers against them.
Once again Don Quixote is victorious, but he himself is on the verge of death. Montesinos celebrates his triumph over Don Quixote. Yet the reappearance of Dulcinea brings the knight back to life. She presents him with a sword and urges him to continue the fight.
As long as there are Don Quixotes fighting in this world, Dulcineas will live forever!
