The events of the play take place in Karabakh. French scholar Monsieur Jordan arrives in the region to study botany and interacts with the local nobility. He represents European science, enlightenment, and rational thinking. In contrast, Dervish Mastali Shah is portrayed as a superstitious charlatan and sorcerer who deceives people and keeps them under his influence.

The story revolves around Shahbaz Bey's desire to travel to France and his family's opposition to the idea. Hoping to prevent his departure, the family turns to Dervish Mastali Shah, whose supposed "magic" is used to frighten Monsieur Jordan into leaving the country. Although superstition appears to prevail in the end, the author consistently criticizes ignorance and backwardness throughout the play, emphasizing the superiority of science, education, and enlightenment.
