Synopsis of the OperaMichele is the captain of a barge moored on the Seine in Paris. He has fallen out of love with his much younger wife, Giorgetta, following the death of their infant child. She is now secretly in love with Luigi, a dockworker employed by Michele.
When Michele goes to sleep, Giorgetta tells Luigi that she will light a match — a signal for him to climb aboard the barge so they can meet.
Unfortunately, Michele returns earlier than usual, bitterly reflecting on his lost love. He lights a match to smoke his pipe. Luigi, mistakenly taking this for Giorgetta’s signal, sneaks onto the barge. Suspicious of Luigi’s presence, Michele forces the dockworker to confess his love and then quietly strangles him to death.
Giorgetta, worried by Luigi’s absence, emerges from her cabin, sees her husband, and asks whether he truly does not wish for them to be together.
“Under my cloak?” Michele asks.
“Yes,” she replies. “You once said that everyone wears a cloak: sometimes it hides joy, sometimes sorrow.”
“But sometimes it conceals a crime!” Michele shouts, tearing the cloak away from Luigi’s lifeless body. Giorgetta screams in horror. Michele violently grabs her and throws her onto her dead lover.
