A contemporary stage interpretation of the ancient Turkic legend “Shahmaran”, based on the libretto and directed by Irada Gozalova.
The story centres on Shahmaran, a legendary half-woman, half-snake creature regarded as a symbol of wisdom, love and eternal life.
According to the legend, on the day Shahmaran returns to the surface, all snakes will emerge from beneath the earth and humanity will be forced to face its destiny. In this production, however, events unfold somewhat differently. Shahmaran returns to a modern world devastated by wars, epidemics and natural disasters. But this time, she does not come to save humanity — she comes to pass judgment...
Having repeatedly encountered betrayal and distrust from humankind, Shahmaran is haunted throughout the performance by one question:
“Are there still honest, sincere, compassionate and pure-hearted people in this world?”
The answer to this question will determine not only the fate of one person, but the fate of all humanity.
